Some of our customers who are already supported by the Pietermaritzburg Mental Health Society, have shared their stories over time. We are inspired by these individuals and, in turn, share their dreams, aspirations and wishes as a reminder of our commitment to transforming the lives of people living with learning disability and mental illness in South Africa.
In February 2015, Amanda attended a special workshop on self advocacy for the staff, service users and parents of people with mental disability. Here is Amanda’s spotlight story:
My name is Amanda I thoroughly enjoyed attending the workshop with Sara and Mike (from Mencap). I learnt that whatever you want to become or achieve, in spite of your disability, you can achieve, if you put your mind to it.
It matters to me that I am able to set my goals and be determined to finish what I have started. I know that if I keep this attitude I will be able to conquer most things. I am employed in the kitchen and I want to make sure I work hard to keep my job.
I want a brighter future where I can plan ahead. I wish to live independently one day.
