Proposals to give more rights to people with intellectual disabilities, autism and mental health conditions in the UK are to be unveiled by the government.  Speaking recently, the Care minister Norman Lamb said the changes would put people in charge of their care, and promote community support as an alternative to hospital. He also admitted  many families felt “their concerns are ignored”.

Mr Lamb said his proposals, which are being put out to consultation in England only , would strengthen people’s rights to challenge decisions made about their care, and make it “much harder” to admit people to hospital when there was better support available in the community.

Gavin Harding co-wrote the government paper. In 2011, he became the first councillor with a learning disability to be elected to Selby Town Council and is the town’s deputy mayor.

He says people with experience of learning disabilities must be involved in the decision-making process.

We at Climb Any Mountain are very happy about these new proposals as we also believe people with intellectual disability and mental illness have a right to a voice and a choice over their lives.
