Supported living goes live...
Climb Any Mountain
Transforming what is available for people with learning disability and mental illness in South Africa, using global best practice.
- After a 12-year journey in September 2024, we’re thrilled to announce that the Pietermaritzburg Mental Health Society in partnership with the Department of Health opened the doors to the first Government Funded person-centred, supported living facility for people with mental disabilities – Imbali House. Four people moved in and started to set up their new home.
- This marks a step change from institutional settings, which are still the norm across the country. It is also a watershed moment, where instead of the Department of Health discharging institutionalized patients directly into the community (with no housing or support to navigate this transition) the Department of Health are funding a supported living service (with service support provided by the Pietermaritzburg Mental Health Society).
- The Pietermaritzburg Mental Health Society embodies the ethos of person-centred services and has an excellent track record of effectively developing life skills that enable the people they support to obtain paid employment, build their confidence, and live as independently as possible, with tailored support where needed.
